New Zealand is home to a thriving medical technology manufacturing industry, which includes medical devices, in-vitro diagnostics, dental equipment and medical imaging equipment. It comprises more than 70 manufacturers, ranging from small New Zealand companies to global players. Our thriving medtech sector contributes significant and growing value to our economy. In February 2009 a report on the medical technology industry highlighted that the sector outputs were assessed at $554m in 2007/2008, and there are approximately 2800 FTEs employed within this sector. Sector outputs are projected to be $1,477bn in revenues and 6500 FTEs in three to five years.

The profile of the medical technology manufacturing industry in New Zealand is growing and there is a strong focus on further developing this high technology sector. Science, innovation and trade were among the top six key drivers highlighted in the Government’s Growth Strategy to improve economic performance for New Zealand. The 2010 budget included $321 million funding over the next four years for Research, Science and Technology and this will have ramifications in the medical technology sector.
