Emerging Medical Technology
The Emerging Medical Technology Group (EMTG) is a group of Medical Device Manufacturing companies and associated research and development organisations who seek to identify common issues relating to their industry, promote networking across industry stakeholders, and fulfil an advocacy role seeking a unified representation of their industry with the purpose of creating and growing successful New Zealand medical device companies. They recognise through their common interest a desire to meet together to discuss issues relating to their industry. 
The Emerging Medical Technology Group seeks to fulfil the following objectives to help develop and accelerate this growing sector: - To expand global opportunities for New Zealand medical technology
- To foster investment in innovation and support entrepreneurs in medical technology
- To support medical technology development that leads to improved patient outcomes
Membership to the EMTG is open to any company who are a member of the Medical Technology Association of New Zealand and whose business is primarily or substantially involved with the research, development or manufacture of medical devices in New Zealand.

Paul Weatherly

Managing Director - Spark Dental
After two years working as a design engineer Paul co-founded Software of Excellence in 1988. From 1988 until 2004 the company grew from 2 to over 140 people, over $20M Revenue and listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 2000.
In 2004 Paul formed Spark Dental Technology with the objective of developing new technology products for the dental industry. In December 2005 Spark Dental Technology acquired the Asia-Pacific “Enterprise” dental software business from Software of Excellence.
Spark Dental Technology has several research and development projects in progress related to new medical devices in the area of computer interfaces and dental imaging.

Diana Siew

Group Manager Engineering & Applied Physics - Industrial Research Limited
Dr Diana Siew leads Industrial Research Limited’s Engineering & Applied Physics Group which specialises in imaging, sensing, communications and automation technologies. A key focus of her group is Health Technologies, in niche imaging, sensing and assistive devices. She is an established science manager and scientist with a keen interest in the commercialisation of early stage innovations.
Diana believes that the future growth of NZ’s medical device industry can only be achieved with better collaboration between industry, research, health providers and government. She is passionate about promoting this within the sector. Diana’s contribution to the medical technologies sector includes leading the 2009 sector capability review project on behalf of the Medical Technologies Industry Cluster

Stephen has a history of marketing and business development with General Management roles in technical and manufacturing companies. Stephen has been with Enztec since Jan 2006 guiding the company through a strong growth phase. Enztec is a medical device company focussed on Orthopaedic solutions for the global market. Enztec’s success has been around instrumentation and smart orthopaedic devices.

David Cotter

Business Development Manager, Medical Devices - Uniservices
David graduated from Waikato University with Bachelor of Management Studies in 1987 (specialised in marketing and international business). He joined Fisher and Paykel Healthcare in 1988 and was primarily involved in territory management – initially in the Far East, followed by Europe and then North America. This included extended periods based in Vienna, Paris and Southern California. David was also involved in product management for infant warming devices and for hospital heated humidification.
Subsequently David worked with consumer products (Sales Manager for furniture designer and manufacturer Design Mobel) and then involved with startup neonatal brain monitoring company, BrainZ in a sales/marketing role. These roles were all export oriented and involved establishing and maintaining export markets but also had a stint in medical device distribution within NZ with 2 years as a Business Unit Manager for Biolab. (large Australasian distributor of laboratory instruments).
David joined Uniservices as Business Development Manager for Medical Devices in August of 2009 . Primarily involved in helping academics across the technical and medical faculties within the University of Auckland to develop their medical device ideas and co-ordinating with external companies that have a potential interest in these (together with helping external companies to find academic help in order to develop their own ideas).

Angela Pantano

Business Development Manager - MTANZ
Angela was appointed as the Business Development Manager for the Medical Technology Association of NZ in May 2009. She works with the Emerging Medical Technologies Group to help drive industry initiatives for growth of the medical technology sector.
Angela is a registered nurse and nurse specialist with many years experience in the public and private health sector. Since leaving nursing she worked with a large multi-national distributor where she gained valuable experience and knowledge of medical device sales within New Zealand.
Angela then worked as Business Development Manager for a start up medical device manufacturer in New Zealand. This appointment gave her particular focus on taking products from New Zealand to international markets. Working for BrainZ gave Angela an understanding of product design and development, regulatory and quality requirements for local and international markets and an insight into capital raising efforts.
Angela understands the highs and lows of taking a new technology to international markets and will apply this knowledge and experience for the benefit of this exciting sector.

Rachael McGuckian

Sector Manager, Medical Technologies - NZTE
With over 12 years experience across the New Zealand medical devices industry in sales, marketing and business management, Rachael joined NZTE in February 2007, to drive a focus around the emerging local sector of manufacturers and developer of health technologies.
In her time in the NZ industry she has worked for a number of the leading medical technologies multi-nationals, and worked in roles that have taken her from hands on client/clinical engagement to senior management roles as part of the executive team.
Her role at NZTE was a new role in February 2007, and over the last 2 years through this role she has been able to help shape the current industry infrastructure, encourage connectivity and develop support mechanisms that are now available to this emerging sector. In January 2009 the release of the NZTE supported Medical Technology Sector Overview provided validation to the size and capability of this sector, and the necessary roadmap for growth in coming years. Over the years she has managed several major industry events/missions; Medica 2007 and 2008, AdvaMed 2007, 2008 and 2009, Innov’08 Medical Technologies stream and AusMedtech 2009.
She has a Bachelor of Business (International Business and Marketing) and a NZ Sterilization Technologies Certificate.

Justin Andrist

Justin Andrist is currently the Sector Manager for Biotech and Medical Technologies at the Canterbury Development Corporation. With nine years experience in Economic Development, both in New Zealand and the United States, Justin has worked with companies across industry sectors with a particular focus on technology and health related companies.
In working with health companies, these efforts have led to several company expansions. As a member of the Medical Technology Association of New Zealand (MTANZ) Emerging Medical Technologies Group, Justin works with some 70+ companies within the Canterbury region who derive some or all of their revenue from Health-related technology innovation.
